How Can Teachers Help?      page two of four pages

  • You may need to use different techniques to help the pupil. Tapes, photocopied sheets and summaries of the intended lesson.
  • Check that homework is written down as messages from school to home and vice versa are often forgotten. Use a buddy so he can check on homework problems arising after school.
  • During the build up to exams, allow access to another student's notes if this helps. Help him to construct a learning timetable. Explain to him what is expected from the exam and the format he should produce it in. Write clear instructions on what he needs to do and bring with him, but be ready with a spare set of equipment should he forget his own!
  • Ensure that equipment to assist them is available. For example a sloping desk, seating that corrects posture, 'hand hugger' pens and pencils. Talk to the occupational Therapist and ask if they can offer advice and suggestions. This can make all the difference to the child's posture and safety and therefore, their ability to be comfortable, relax and learn.
  • Consider the use of a computer for writing, teach computer shills to increase typing abilities. Teach touch-typing and allow the chid to use a computer, or lap top in the classroom, if this helps him.
  • Make certain that the child has a close view of the black/white board; allow extra time for then to make use of the information from it. They may not be able to refocus as rapidly as their peers may. Be aware of this, as this will considerably slow him down.
  • Try to help them improve their organisational skills. Digital watches with buzzers can remind students to do things at certain time. Buzzer keys are available that record a 15 second voice reminder. Keep keys on a curly plastic chain. Use clear plastic pencil cases, so the child can see what he is looking for. Keep a list of contents with the case so he can check the contents back into the case at the end of each lesson. Use a ruler with a ridge or put Dycem on the end to make it grip the paper.
