Project 1 - Design Your Own Placemat

Remember it’s important that an adult helps you with any cutting out and when laminating your placemat!!

Materials and Tools:

  • 4 x different A4 coloured card
  • 1 x A5 White Card
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Coloured felt pens
  • Scissors
  • Clear Adhesive Tape
  • Laminating Pouch
  • Laminator

Divide each piece of coloured card into 5 equal strips, draw pencil lines down the length of the card (the longest side).

Carefully cut along the pencil lines on each piece of card.

You now have 5 strips of each colour. Pick one colour and lay the strips on the table leaving a small gap between each strip.

With help from an adult, tape the top of the strips to the table (to hold strip in place and stop movement).

Using a different coloured strip weave the card in and out of the strips stuck to the table.

Then take a different coloured strip and alternate in a weave pattern and continue until you complete the mat.

Tape all the remaining edges around the mat to fix the strips.

On the separate A5 white card, design your own place mat. Use bright colours to make the design stands out.

Place your design in the centre of woven mat and tape all sides of the design to the mat.
Cut around the edge of the design leaving a 2cm border.

Place the mat inside a laminating pouch.

With help from an adult laminate your mat and leave it to cool under a heavy book.

When the mat is cool, cut around the edge leaving a 1cm border.

ENJOY YOUR NEW MAT!!!!
